PI: Ana Longo Berrios

CLAS | Biology

My research for the past seven months focuses on Carios ticks, a type of soft tick recently found parasitizing coquí frogs in Puerto Rico. Using nanopore sequencing technology, I aim to identify the specific species of these ticks and explore their potential role in transmitting diseases to humans. By analyzing the bacteria (Rickettsia) that these ticks harbor, I will assess any potential public health risks posed by these ticks and contribute to our understanding of tick-borne diseases in the region.

about.

I’m a sophomore biology major on a pre-med track, and I've developed a passion for understanding the intersection of science and human health. As a tutor to sick children at the local Ronald McDonald House, I’ve experienced the value of education as a tool to empower others—a philosophy that I bring to my academic pursuits and my goals for the future. I’m motivated by a drive to create positive change through both knowledge and compassion, seeing every challenge as an opportunity for growth. I strive to make a difference by improving lives through medicine, with hopes to one day serve as a compassionate physician who makes an impact in communities both near and far.
